{"id":583,"date":"2010-02-15T12:30:38","date_gmt":"2010-02-15T17:30:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jasemccarty.com\/blog\/?p=583"},"modified":"2010-02-15T12:30:38","modified_gmt":"2010-02-15T17:30:38","slug":"netapp-rapid-cloning-utility-rcu-3-0","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jasemccarty.com\/blog\/netapp-rapid-cloning-utility-rcu-3-0\/","title":{"rendered":"NetApp Rapid Cloning Utility (RCU) 3.0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I received a beta copy of the NetApp Rapid Cloning Utility 3.0 the other day, and figured I would give it a spin this weekend.\u00a0 Almost a year ago, the RCU 2.0 was mentioned in a NetApp blog posting: <strong><a title=\"Sneak Peek - NetApp Rapid Clonging Utility (RCU) 2.0\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.netapp.com\/virtualization\/2009\/03\/sneak-peek-netapp-rcu-20.html\" target=\"_blank\">Sneak Peek &#8211; NetApp Rapid Cloning Utility (RCU) 2.0<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0 In December of 2009, NetApp provided a video of the new release: <strong><a title=\"Sneak Preview - NetApp RCU 3.0\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.netapp.com\/virtualization\/2009\/12\/sneak-preview-netapp-rcu-30.html\" target=\"_blank\">Sneak Preview &#8211; NetApp RCU 3.0<\/a><\/strong>. Also in December, Vaughn Stewart provided a post with more detail: <strong><a title=\"Preview: Rapid Cloning Utility 3.0 vCenter Plug-in\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.netapp.com\/virtualstorageguy\/2009\/12\/preview-rapid-cloning-utility-30-vcenter-plug-in.html\" target=\"_blank\">Preview: Rapid Cloning Utility 3.0 vCenter Plug-in<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0 All of the same features are there with some additions, including vSphere and VMware View 4 support.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Test Lab<\/strong><br \/>\nTo give the RCU 3.0 Beta a spin, I fired up a virtual lab consisting of 2 ESXi 4.0 Update 1 hosts, 1 vCenter Server VM, and the <strong><a title=\"NetApp ONTAP Simulator (Requires NOW Account and Use Rights)\" href=\"http:\/\/now.netapp.com\/NOW\/cgi-bin\/simulator\" target=\"_blank\">NetApp ONTAP Simulator<\/a><\/strong> (7.3.2).\u00a0 There is a limitation of the ONTAP Simulator (7.3.2) because to &#8220;rapidly clone&#8221; guests, a FlexClone license is required.\u00a0 To overcome this limitation, I used the FlexClone license from the 8.0 ONTAP Simulator, which appears to work fine in the 7.3.2 ONTAP Simulator.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Features<\/strong><br \/>\nSome of the features include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Support for vSphere with both ESX(i) 4.0 and 3.5 hosts<\/li>\n<li>VMFS datastore creation over FCP and iSCSI protocols<\/li>\n<li>Multi-VMDK file cloning (distribute VM files across multiple  datastores)<\/li>\n<li>Deduplication on datastores<\/li>\n<li>Auto-grow on NFS datastores<\/li>\n<li>Grow datastores, and shrink (NFS only) datastores<\/li>\n<li>Customizable clone count increment<\/li>\n<li>Automatic import of VMs into VMware View Server (including View 4.0)<\/li>\n<li>Support for XenDesktop<\/li>\n<li>Support for vWorkspace<\/li>\n<li>Ability to group deployed VMs by folder<\/li>\n<li>Redeploying from VM\/Template to previously deployed VMs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I really like the last two features&#8230; Grouping by folder and Redeploying VMs are great additions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Grouping by folder<\/strong><br \/>\nIf you have deployed a lot of VMs, and want a logical separation in the VMs and Templates view, folders make it easy.\u00a0 The RCU 2.x utility would simply create the VMs, but you (the admin) would have to logically separate them.<\/p>\n<table border=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasemccarty.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/rcu1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-594\" title=\"rcu1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jasemccarty.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/rcu1-150x150.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<td><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasemccarty.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/rcu2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-593\" title=\"rcu2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jasemccarty.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/rcu2-150x150.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<td><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasemccarty.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/rcu4.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-591\" title=\"rcu4\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jasemccarty.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/rcu4-150x150.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><strong>Redeploying VMs<\/strong><br \/>\nWith deployed VMs being a file level FlexClone of a master VM or Template, as patches or applications are added, the difference between the master and the clones is going to get bigger.\u00a0 What if an application is added, or an existing application is upgraded?\u00a0 Like Microsoft Office?\u00a0 Or other applications?\u00a0 This feature makes it easy to update your master, and then redeploy your clones.\u00a0 Very slick.<\/p>\n<table border=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasemccarty.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/rcu5.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-590\" title=\"rcu5\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jasemccarty.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/rcu5-150x150.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<td><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasemccarty.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/rcu6.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-589\" title=\"rcu6\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jasemccarty.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/rcu6-150x150.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><strong>Wish List<\/strong><br \/>\nI also have a wish list for the RCU 3.0.\u00a0 I&#8217;d like to see the VSC 1.0, the RCU 2.x\/3.x, and the SMVI interfaces all combine into a single entity.
