Looking back at emails, it was actually about two years ago.<\/p>\n<p>When the Isilon Storage Replication Adapter 1.0 (SRA) for VMware Site Recovery Manager 5.0 (SRM) came out, it was clunky to say the least.<\/p>\n<p>Before installing the SRA on your SRM server, there was a lot of \u00a0work that had to be done. \u00a0There was a java tool used to configure the source &amp; target directories, the different array IDs being used, and blah, blah, blah. Not to mention the way things were replicated back and forth I didn&#8217;t quite follow.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe I just didn&#8217;t get it. \u00a0Sometimes I&#8217;m a little slow and forget things, or at least that&#8217;s what <strong><a title=\"@Mike_Colson\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mike_colson\" target=\"_blank\">Mike Colson<\/a><\/strong> might tell you after following me around in his first quarter as a new vSpecialist on the EMC Federal team.<\/p>\n<p><strong>New version<\/strong><br \/>\nIt looks like the team at <strong><a title=\"@EMCIsilon\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EMCIsilon\" target=\"_blank\">Isilon<\/a><\/strong> has worked pretty hard to make things easy for old folks like me. \u00a0The 2.0 version of the Isilon SRA is MUCH, and I mean MUCH easier than before.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->As always, there are some minimum requirements that need to be met before attempting to be successful.<br \/>\nThose requirements are (from the docs)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Primary &amp; Secondary clusters must be running OneFS 7.1 or later<br \/>\n(sorry for those still on 6.5.x or 7.0.x)<\/li>\n<li>SyncIQ licenses must be configured on both Primary &amp; Secondary clusters<\/li>\n<li>SnapshotIQ licenses must be configured on both Primary &amp; Secondary clusters<\/li>\n<li>VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager must be 5.1 or later (more on that in a minute)<\/li>\n<li>VMware vCenter must be version 5.1 or later<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Or Later&#8230;<\/strong><br \/>\n<a title=\"@peglarr\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/peglarr\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Rob Peglar<\/strong><\/a> mentioned to me a couple weeks back that the SRA 2.0 was validated for VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager 5.1.1.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I looked that the VMware HCL site (<strong><a title=\"VMware Compatibility Guide\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vmware.com\/go\/hcl?src=vmw_so_vex_jmcca_429\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.vmware.com\/go\/hcl<\/a><\/strong>) and noticed that the Isilon SRA 2.0 is <strong>ONLY<\/strong> supported with SRM 5.1 Update 1 and SRM 5.1 (despite the &#8220;or later&#8221; mentioned above).<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasemccarty.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/isra-hcl1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-2880\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jasemccarty.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/isra-hcl1.png\" alt=\"SRA 2.0 HCL\" width=\"552\" height=\"290\" setup<\/strong><br \/>\nI&#8217;m not going to go deep into the VMware SRM configuration, other than how it interacts with Isilon.<\/p>\n<p>The install process is basically as follows (provided all licenses are in place):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Install the SRA on both of the SRM servers running in the Primary &amp; Secondary site<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Configure the SyncIQ replication policy<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Create the Array Managers for Isilon<\/li>\n<li>Setup Protection Groups<\/li>\n<li>Setup Recovery Plans<\/li>\n<li>Failover &amp; Reprotect<\/li>\n<li>Failback &amp; Reprotect<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Installing the SRA msi is pretty quick\/painless, so I&#8217;ll skip that, but you can get it from here:<br \/>\n<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/my.vmware.com\/web\/vmware\/details?downloadGroup=SRM5111&amp;productId=291&amp;rPId=3727?src=vmw_so_vex_jmcca_429\">https:\/\/my.vmware.com\/web\/vmware\/details?downloadGroup=SRM5111&amp;productId=291&amp;rPId=3727<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Make sure to\u00a0<strong>Rescan SRAs<\/strong> to ensure that SRM knows the Isilon SRA 2.0 is there&#8230;<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasemccarty.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/isi-sra-rescan.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-2934\" \/>\nUnless you want to run everything under root credentials, I&#8217;d recommend (as well as the release notes) running the SRM processes as a dedicated user. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>To do this, log into the console of each Isilon cluster, and run the following commands:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Create a VMware User<\/strong><br \/>\nisi auth users create VMwareUser &#8211;enabled true &#8211;set-password<\/li>\n<li><strong>Set the appropriate Group Membership<\/strong><br \/>\nisi auth roles modify VMwareAdmin &#8211;add-user VMwareUser<br \/>\n(<em>this is correct, rather than VMwareAdmin in the Release Notes<\/em>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasemccarty.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/isi-sra-09.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" left;\"><strong>Configuring SyncIQ<\/strong><br \/>\nFrom the Isilon UI on the <strong>Primary Isilon cluster<\/strong>, click on <strong>DATA PROTECTION<\/strong>, then <strong>SyncIQ<\/strong>, then <strong>Policies<\/strong>, then <strong>Create a SyncIQ Policy<\/strong>.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasemccarty.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/isi-sra-01.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" (<em>only on the Primary Isilon Cluster<\/em>), the SRM configuration can begin.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Array Managers<\/strong><br \/>\nIn SRM, Array Managers have to be configured, so it will know which array is talking to which other array. \u00a0In the SRA 1.0 for Isilon, this was a little clunky, and much of it was setup outside of SRM.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">After clicking on the Site Recovery icon in the vSphere Client, go to Array Managers, and right click on the Primary site (vc1.sitea.jase.local in my case), and click on <strong>Add Array Manager<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I picked a <strong>Display Name<\/strong> of <strong>Isilon<\/strong>, and the <strong>SRA Type<\/strong> <strong>EmcIsilonSra<\/strong>.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasemccarty.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/isi-sra-07.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter Plan<\/strong> (<em>TestRP for me<\/em>) in the left pane, and click\u00a0<strong>Recovery Steps<\/strong> in the right pane. That was easy<\/strong><br \/>\nMuch easier than the last time I attempted it&#8230; I have to say that the EMC Isilon team has really done a great job on the 2.0 version of the Isilon SRA for VMware SRM.<\/p>\n<p>I set all of this up in my lab, in a couple hours<br \/>\n(had to install 2 new VC&#8217;s, 2 ESXi hosts, SRM, &amp;
