{"id":1134,"date":"2010-11-17T22:17:15","date_gmt":"2010-11-18T03:17:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jasemccarty.com\/blog\/?p=1134"},"modified":"2010-11-17T22:17:15","modified_gmt":"2010-11-18T03:17:15","slug":"scr331-smart-card-reader-5-25-firmware-update-windows-7","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jasemccarty.com\/blog\/scr331-smart-card-reader-5-25-firmware-update-windows-7\/","title":{"rendered":"SCR331 Smart Card Reader &#8211; 5.25 Firmware Update &#038; Windows 7"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasemccarty.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/SCR331.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-1135\" title=\"SCR331\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jasemccarty.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/SCR331-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>I have been doing some reorganizing lately, and I ran across a &#8220;broken&#8221; Smart Card reader.<\/p>\n<p>It was &#8220;broken&#8221; because it would not work in Windows Vista.\u00a0 Personally, I wouldn&#8217;t consider &#8220;not working in Vista&#8221; a reason for something to be &#8220;broken.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Really Broken?<br \/>\n<\/strong>So I began to look deeper into this &#8220;broken&#8221; SCR, and see what the deal was.\u00a0 It is a <strong><a title=\"SCM Microsystems: SCR331\" href=\"http:\/\/www.scmmicro.com\/products-services\/smart-card-readers-terminals\/smart-card-reader\/scr331.html\" target=\"_blank\">SCM Microsystems SCR331<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>From the above link, it would appear that they still support the SCR331.\u00a0 So I looked at the support page for some Windows 7 x64 drivers.\u00a0 I found one here:<br \/>\n<strong><a title=\"SCM Microsystems: Downloads\" href=\"http:\/\/www.scmmicro.com\/support\/pc-security-support\/downloads.html\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.scmmicro.com\/support\/pc-security-support\/downloads.html<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I chose the appropriate download (for Windows 7 x64) to get started.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasemccarty.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/scr331-drivers.png\"><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasemccarty.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/scr331-drivers1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1145\" title=\"SCR331 Drivers\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jasemccarty.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/scr331-drivers1-300x139.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"139\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So I&#8217;ve got the drivers&#8230; I must be good to go.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Broken?<\/strong><br \/>\nWell, I connected the SCR to my system, pointed to the drivers, and voila!<\/p>\n<p>Nothing.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe this darn thing is broken.\u00a0 Maybe Windows 7\/Vista just can&#8217;t use it.<\/p>\n<p>No way&#8230; Why are there drivers to use it, when it isn&#8217;t &#8220;supported?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Trial and Error<\/strong><br \/>\nSo I fired up a Windows XP VM, loaded the drivers and voila! It worked.\u00a0 Alright, something is a little strange here.<\/p>\n<p>Then I noticed something&#8230; Looking at the downloads page for Windows 7 x64 and Windows XP I noticed something very different between the two.<\/p>\n<p>Look at the firmware section from the download page for Windows 7 x64<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasemccarty.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/win7page.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1148\" title=\"Windows 7 Download Page\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jasemccarty.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/win7page-300x59.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"59\" \/><\/a>Then look at the firmware section from the download page for Windows XP (32bit)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasemccarty.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/winxppage.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1150\" title=\"Windows XP Download Page\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jasemccarty.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/winxppage-300x263.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"263\" \/><\/a>So&#8230; There is a firmware update for the device.\u00a0 Good to know.\u00a0 Maybe that&#8217;s the fix.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Updating the Firmware<\/strong><br \/>\nI figured that this wouldn&#8217;t work in Windows 7 x64, but what the heck, the SCR was &#8220;broken&#8221; anyway.<\/p>\n<p>Upon downloading and extracting the .zip file, I ran the included FwUpdate.exe to begin the upgrade process.\u00a0 Surprisingly, no compatibility issues, and it ran without issue.<\/p>\n<p>My firmware was at version 1.40, and this package 5.25.\u00a0 Afterward, the SCR was fully patched to 5.25.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasemccarty.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/firmware-14.png\"><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasemccarty.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/firmware-141.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1380\" title=\"firmware-14\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jasemccarty.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/firmware-141.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"295\" height=\"204\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And then afterward:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasemccarty.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/firmwareupdate.png\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasemccarty.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/firmwareupdate1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1382\" title=\"firmwareupdate\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jasemccarty.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/11\/firmwareupdate1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"311\" height=\"214\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I added the appropriate drivers to Windows 7 x64, and voila! It worked.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Moral To The Story<\/strong><br \/>\nI know that these devices are not that expensive, a <strong><a title=\"SCR331\" href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=scr331&amp;tbs=shop%3A1&amp;aq=f\" target=\"_blank\">Google Shopping<\/a><\/strong> search lists them around $15 each.<\/p>\n<p>I can only imagine how many of these have been discarded by various entities, because they &#8220;didn&#8217;t work&#8221; with Windows Vista\/7. So it would cost an organization with 100 of these, about $1500 to replace them with a similar &#8220;supported&#8221; device if the prices were comparable.<\/p>\n<p>In short, before something is discarded, be 100% certain is isn&#8217;t going to work.\u00a0 It could cost you in the long run.<\/p>\n<p>Now maybe I can see if I can get it to work with <strong><a title=\"VMware View\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vmware.com\/products\/view\/\" target=\"_blank\">VMware View<\/a><\/strong>&#8230; I guess I&#8217;ll start with Jason Langone&#8217;s post: <strong><a title=\"How to Configure VMware View 4.5 with US Department of Defense CAC Authentication\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thinkvirt.com\/?q=node\/211\" target=\"_blank\">How to Configure VMware View 4.5 with US Department of Defense CAC Authentication<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I have been doing some reorganizing lately, and I ran across a &#8220;broken&#8221; Smart Card reader.
