{"id":1037,"date":"2010-09-09T21:02:17","date_gmt":"2010-09-10T02:02:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jasemccarty.com\/blog\/?p=1037"},"modified":"2010-09-09T21:02:17","modified_gmt":"2010-09-10T02:02:17","slug":"sles-11-sp1-for-vmware-just-that-easy-on-workstation-7","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jasemccarty.com\/blog\/sles-11-sp1-for-vmware-just-that-easy-on-workstation-7\/","title":{"rendered":"SLES 11 SP1 for VMware &#8211; Just that easy on Workstation 7"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Background<\/strong><br \/>\nBack in June, several media outlets announced SUSE Linux Enterprise Server from Novell would be the standard platform for future VMware virtual appliances.\u00a0 This is good for VMware customers because a standard platform has been chosen.\u00a0 This is good for Novell, for obvious reasons.<\/p>\n<p>Then VMware announced that with qualifying purchases of VMware products, a free copy of SLES would be included.<\/p>\n<dl>\n<dt>From the <strong><a title=\"SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) for VMware, Enterprise Linux\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vmware.com\/products\/sles-for-vmware\/faq.html\" target=\"_blank\">VMware web site<\/a><\/strong>:<\/dt>\n<blockquote>\n<dt>What are the conditions to qualify for SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for VMware?<\/dt>\n<dd>\n<ol>\n<li>Purchase a qualified vSphere SKU on or after June 9, 2010<\/li>\n<li>Have an active VMware vSphere Support and Subscription (SnS) contract<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>For more details, please read <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vmware.com\/products\/sles-for-vmware\/get.html#c207168\" target=\"_blank\">terms &amp; conditions<\/a><\/strong> and the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vmware.com\/landing_pages\/sles-for-vmware\/eligible-products.html\" target=\"_blank\">list of qualified vSphere SKUs<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/dd>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/dl>\n<p>The FAQ page (<strong><a title=\"SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) for VMware, Enterprise Linux\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vmware.com\/products\/sles-for-vmware\/faq.html\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.vmware.com\/products\/sles-for-vmware\/faq.html<\/a><\/strong>) has a good bit of information about the details.<\/p>\n<p>It is a pretty good deal.\u00a0 A copy of SLES for each quaifying SKU you purchase.\u00a0 I figured I would give it a spin.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How To<\/strong><br \/>\nThe download and activation process can be found here: <strong><a title=\"Getting Started with SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) for VMware\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vmware.com\/products\/sles-for-vmware\/get.html\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.vmware.com\/products\/sles-for-vmware\/get.html<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Once I downloaded the necessary ISOs, I figured I would start out with VMware Workstation 7.<\/p>\n<p>After selecting New -&gt; Virtual Machine, I was presented with the New VM Wizard, and chose a typical install.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasemccarty.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/step011.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1048\" title=\"1 - Typical\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jasemccarty.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/step011-300x272.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"272\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Upon pointing the wizard to the SLES ISO, Workstation recognized the ISO, and decided to configure the VM for SLES.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasemccarty.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/step021.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1050\" title=\"2 - Mount SLES ISO\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jasemccarty.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/step021-300x273.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"273\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Workstation has a nice feature that allows for personalization of the guest OS, and here it prompted for my information.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasemccarty.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/step031.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1051\" title=\"3 - Personalization\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jasemccarty.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/step031-300x275.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"275\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Then I chose all the rest of the defaults, and completed the initial VM setup.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasemccarty.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/step06.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1053\" title=\"4 - Finish\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jasemccarty.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/step06-300x272.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"272\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After powering on the machine, the VMware Workstation autoinstallation\/personalization feature did all the work for me, and began the installation. With the Core i7 machine I&#8217;m using, the installation went pretty quickly.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasemccarty.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/step08.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1054\" title=\"5 - Autoinstall\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jasemccarty.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/step08-300x225.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Upon reboot, it appears I was successful. And I have to say, nice customization of the boot screen by VMware.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasemccarty.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/step09.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1055\" title=\"6 - First Boot\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jasemccarty.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/step09-300x225.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As expected, I had to enter my credentials to get into the system.\u00a0 I have to say, I like the sign-in customization here too.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasemccarty.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/step10.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1056\" title=\"7 - Login\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jasemccarty.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/step10-300x225.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After entering both my username and password, I was presented with a desktop.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jasemccarty.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/step12.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1057\" title=\"8 - Desktop\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jasemccarty.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/step12-300x225.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Keep in mind, this is a quick, easy, installation, that used all defaults, and VMware Workstation 7 autoinstallation.\u00a0 This installation method won&#8217;t be for everyone, but it can be just that easy.<\/p>\n<p>Now I just need to brush off my Linux skills.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Update:<br \/>\n<\/strong>After getting a tweet from <strong><a title=\"@jasemccarty Cool. Actually you get more than _one_ copy of SLES - you get unlimited per qualifying vSphere host\" href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/eric_gray\/status\/24142176075\" target=\"_blank\">@eric_gray<\/a><\/strong>, I looked a little deeper into the number of authorized SLES 11 installs I mentioned.<\/p>\n<p>Looking at the <strong><a title=\"Getting Started with SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) for VMware\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vmware.com\/products\/sles-for-vmware\/get.html\" target=\"_blank\">Getting Started<\/a><\/strong> page, it states:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Customers will receive SLES with one (1) entitlement for a subscription  to patches and updates per qualified VMware vSphere SKU. For example, if  a customer buys 100 licenses of a qualified vSphere Enterprise Plus  SKU, that customer would receive SLES with one hundred (100)  entitlements for subscription to patches and updates.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That would lead me to believe 1 SLES install per qualified SKU.<\/p>\n<p>But&#8230; Looking at the <strong><a title=\"SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) for VMware FAQs\" href=\"http:\/\/www.vmware.com\/products\/sles-for-vmware\/faq.html\" target=\"_blank\">Frequently Asked Questions<\/a><\/strong> page, it states:<\/p>\n<dl>\n<blockquote>\n<dt><strong>Is there any limit to the number of SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for  VMware virtual machines I can run on a qualified vSphere host?<\/strong><\/dt>\n<dt>There is no limit. Customers can run an unlimited number of  SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for VMware virtual machines per qualified  vSphere host.
